In the context of sustainable fisheries, the need to enable developing countries to develop national, regional, and subregional capacities for infrastructure and integrated management and the sustainable use of fisheries cannot be overemphasized.

Training and research were very important for the sustainable development of fisheries and agriculture.

At the end of the panel discussions, some delegations expressed their disappointment that the discussions had focused primarily on constraints to the sustainable development of fisheries rather than on how fisheries could contribute to sustainable development.

What actions can be taken to address the impediments to the sustainable development of fisheries?

Sustainable development of fisheries in line with the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries was mentioned as being one of the core elements of such rehabilitation.

The contribution of fisheries to sustainable development relies on the continuing health of functioning, productive ecosystems.

The report also states that for the fisheries sector to contribute to sustainable development, it has itself to be managed in a sustainable way .

In order to conform with the universally accepted principle of sustainable fisheries management, the Fiji ministry responsible for fisheries has set itself four key targeted outcomes the sustainable use of all fisheries products the creation of livelihoods through small and micro enterprise development support for community livelihoods through competitive exports and efficient food security and the promotion of equitable participation by all in priority areas of socio economic development.

How can the availability of data and information that is fundamental to the effective conservation and sustainable management of fisheries resources be improved?

What are the particular issues for small island developing States related to the sustainable development of fisheries and how can they be addressed?

With regard to factors limiting the contribution of fisheries to sustainable development, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and overfishing remain a primary challenge.
