The sector specific services are intended to meet the requirements of the food and non food agricultural processing industries.

Promoting the investment climate to enable the private sector to realize the opportunities given by the largely unexploited resources in the food processing sector

Rural tourism, handicraft and service sector, crayfish and fish growing, and food processing in small enterprises have been supported (these fields of business often largely employ women workers).

The main industries are textiles, food processing, beverages, construction materials, clothing, paper products, and shrimp.

Processing

Food loss on farms, during processing, transport, and at markets undermines food security in most developing countries, where post harvest losses can reach as high as 40 of production. Investment in infrastructure for transport, storage, and marketing of food is badly needed, as are programs to train farmers in best practices.

3. A policy for European food systems would treat production, processing, distribution, logistics, and retailing in combination. Consumption patterns and preferences are an integral part of such systems.

In terms of strategic perspectives, the Review action plan pointed to the cotton and food processing sectors and the port of Cotonou as providing high potential investing opportunities.

A further SIRM project is being developed for the dairy sector in Central America, and other similar projects are under consideration for the textile and rice processing sectors.

Milk processing

The programmes financed by many developed countries lay the emphasis on modernizing the agricultural sector, promoting agricultural, forestry and pastoral production systems, and supporting the processing and marketing of products.
