One is it's got to do economic reform, not fuss about the political constitution.

Refusing to prioritize, dealing mainly with the most publicized problems, is wrong. Imagine doctors at a perpetually overrun hospital refusing to perform triage on casualties, merely attending patients as they arrived and fast tracking those whose families made the most fuss.

And to my astonishment, when I began seriously studying other traditions, I began to realize that belief which we make such a fuss about today is only a very recent religious enthusiasm that surfaced only in the West, in about the 17th century.

Under the deluge of minute to minute text conversations, emails, relentless exchange of media channels and passwords and apps and reminders and Tweets and tags, we lose sight of what all this fuss is supposed to be about in the first place ourselves.

And yet confidence in the recent decisions taken in Brussels remains low, owing not only to dissipated trust and the fuss about the British veto, but also to the apparent absence of measures to intervene in the current crisis. But this, too, is a misconception.

AMSTERDAM There has been a lot of fuss lately about the psychological experiment that Facebook conducted on nearly 700,000 of its users. Today, geography still plays a role, though it is Turkey s contiguity with Syria, Iraq, and Iran that has left the US reluctant to make a fuss about press freedom. The US has supported Turkey s accession to the EU, but its efforts would have more credibility in Europe if it also pressed Turkey to address its shortcomings.

Instead of a show of lofty disdain, or official silence, it made a colossal fuss, protesting fiercely about plots to undermine China, and putting dozens of prominent Chinese intellectuals, including Liu s wife, Liu Xia, under house arrest. As a result, the utterly powerless, hitherto quite obscure Liu Xiaobo, has become not only world famous, but much better known inside China, too.
