Third, the internal realignment of America s political cultural perspective will be reinforced by the ongoing global shift of wealth and power from the West to the East.

The shift in the global distribution of power, accompanied by the emergence of new threats and challenges, has dramatically changed the context within which the United Nations operates.

And if we're going to deal with these two great power shifts that I've described, the power shift represented by transition among states, the power shift represented by diffusion of power away from all states, we're going to have to develop a new narrative of power in which we combine hard and soft power into strategies of smart power.

Most current projections of a shift in the global balance of power are based primarily on one factor projections of countries GDP growth. They thus ignore the other dimensions of power, including both hard military power and the soft power of narrative, not to mention the policy difficulties of combining them into successful strategies.

In the north, traditional power structures will have to shift to accommodate the new alignment.

And the first of these, the first two of these, is about a shift in power.

And the greatest danger we have of managing this power transition of the shift toward the East is fear.

But let me tell you a little bit about the other shift that I'm talking about, which is power diffusion.

One common characteristic, then and now, is a power shift. Back then, Great Britain s relative power was in decline, while Germany s had been rising since German unification in 1871.

And that's changed, because we've had a huge shift in the balance of power from the news organizations to the audience.

But does Turkey s shift of focus southward and toward regional power status come at the expense of the country s EU ambitions?

Push forward global clean development, power interconnection and other top ten initiatives to accelerate global energy interconnection.

As usual, however, perceptions are lagging behind reality, which means that Germany is still widely viewed as the eurozone s most powerful force. But, as the global business cycle accelerates Germany s return to the old normal, the power shift within Europe will become increasingly difficult to ignore.

In order to provide more energy to meet development goals without accelerating global warming, there must be a shift to a new energy infrastructure built around renewables (of which the most significant are probably solar power, wind, and biofuels), cleaner coal, and carbon capture and storage.

This is not to say that Obama has had no transformational effects. He changed the course of an unpopular policy in Iraq and Afghanistan embraced counter insurgency tactics based on less costly uses of military and cyber power increased American soft power in many parts of the world and began to shift America s strategic focus to Asia, the global economy s fastest growing region.

These realities represent a power shift of a kind that we have not experienced in our lifetimes. China s economic power over the US is now substantial, and will limit not only America s influence in the financial markets, but also its capacity to use military power.

The shift system operates in a morning shift from 8.45 to about 13.00, and an afternoon shift until about 18.30.

Combine the power of a global ethic with the power of our ability to communicate and organize globally, with the challenges that we now face, most of which are global in their nature.

But the world order has changed. Emerging markets and developing countries now account for 50 of global GDP and 75 of global growth, and demographics will further accentuate the shift in the center of economic gravity.

What will it mean to wield power in the global information age of the twenty first century? Which resources will produce power?

NEW YORK In the coming decades, nothing will matter more for global peace, prosperity, and governance than how the United States and China handle the ongoing shift in their relative power. In the long term, today s other pressing challenges including Russia s relationship with the West and events in the tumultuous Middle East will amount almost to sideshows by comparison.

America absorbs Chinese imports, pays China in dollars, and China holds dollars, amassing 2.5 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, much of it held in US Treasury securities. This very basic shift in my physical orientation helped me shift my perspective in relation to the glacier.

Well it seems to me that we're now seeing a fundamental shift of power, broadly speaking, away from nations gathered around the Atlantic seaboard to the nations gathered around the Pacific rim.

Today, consumers' global spending power continues to increase, with private consumption expenditures totalling 22.1 trillion in 2004.

This century there's a shift.

Responsibility for overseeing the global economy is passing rapidly from the G 7 8 to the G 20, as it should. The latter accounts for 90 of global GDP and two thirds of the world s population, so this shift is highly desirable indeed, essential.
