Public interest and consumer groups use the List to urge Governments and manufacturers to remove hazardous products from the marketplace, or to appraise citizens about the health related effects of using certain products.

In particular, there are a growing number of standards on such issues as the efficiency of energy consuming products (such as electric motors and household appliances), the use in products of toxic or hazardous chemicals and materials, and the recyclability of products.

Specific offence provisions are also included in special statutes dealing, for example, with water pollution, atomic energy, fisheries, migratory birds, hazardous products and dangerous goods.
