UNICEF supported water, sanitation and hygiene promotion initiatives in schools in 76 countries in 2004, compared to 47 in 2002.

The strategic aim is to expand the promotion of improved hygiene and sanitation, while maintaining support for improved water supply services.

Hygiene and promotion of health could help save lives, but knowing what vaccinations should be administered and when was equally important.

UNICEF programming presence worldwide presents an opportunity to increase emphasis on hygiene promotion, even in countries without a UNICEF supported WASH programme.

The promotion of health education on both basic hygiene and sexual and reproductive health should not be limited solely to schools and formal health delivery systems.

Through its years of WASH programming in priority countries, UNICEF has accumulated experience and expertise in hygiene promotion that can be readily shared with other countries.

A training of trainers programme and training on hygiene promotion in communities were initiated, and staff were sensitized on gender aspects, though gender sensitization had a limited impact.

Advocacy and technical support for hygiene promotion activities will be carried out by country offices either as stand alone initiatives or as complementary activities to programmes, including early childhood development, health and immunization.

Article 11 The production, marketing and use of food additives must conform to the hygiene standards for use of food additives and the hygiene control regulations the food additives that do not conform to the hygiene standards and the hygiene control regulations may not be marketed and used.

At the same time, competency will be reinforced in the areas of programme management, strategic planning, hygiene promotion and communication, participatory approaches (including the Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation approach, as well as tools for promoting the participation of children), advocacy and policy development, emergency preparedness planning and coordination, school based programming and human rights based approaches to programming.

Following the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Senegal established the Ministry of Prevention, Hygiene Promotion and Sanitation (Ministère de la Prévention, de l'Hygiene Publique et de l'Assainissement) as the ministerial level institutional home for addressing sanitation issues.

Evidence and lessons learned in the past demonstrate that hygiene, sanitation and water programmes should have both a strategic approach and an appropriate mix of programme components, including promotion of behavioural change, access to facilities and an enabling environment.

In view of women's role in household sanitation and hygiene, awareness raising campaigns can be effective when targeted to this audience, mobilizing women to spread the sanitation and hygiene message.
