Since the programme commenced, the incidence of cervical cancer has fallen by over 30 per cent (from 1,078 new cases detected in 1990 to 735 cases in 2001) mortality from cervical cancer has fallen by over 50 per cent (from 6.1 deaths per 100,000 women in 1983 to 2.8 per 100,000 women in 2003).

The USPSTF recently issued an even sharper warning about the prostate specific antigen test for prostate cancer, after concluding that the test s harms outweigh its benefits. Chest X rays for lung cancer and Pap tests for cervical cancer have received similar, albeit less definitive, criticism.

In both 2000 and 2001, the highest detection rates for micro invasive squamous cell cancer were found in women in the 30 34 age group.

There is some evidence of relatively low participation in routine breast cancer screening among women of Turkish and Moroccan origin and of relatively low participation in routine cervical cancer screening among women of Moroccan and Antillean origin.

In 2000, the provincial government supported a social marketing campaign to increase awareness of the importance for women to be regularly screened to prevent cervical cancer.

There are other concerns with regard to reproductive health relating to the health of the aged, abortion issues, cervical and breast cancer, infertility, gender based violence and discrimination.

Cervical screening

In January 2001, the provincial government supported establishment of the PEI Pap Screening Program with the goal to reduce the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer in PEI.

And obviously there's been tremendous practical applications associated with this world things like the eradication of smallpox, the advent of a vaccine against cervical cancer, which we now know is mostly caused by human papillomavirus.

So it is worth remembering that even in wealthy countries, there is an urgent need to overcome challenges in protecting the hardest to reach girls, who often are at high risk of HPV infection. Overcoming these challenges is essential to reducing cervical cancer and pre cancer rates in the coming years.

Existing HPV vaccines can prevent up to 70 of cervical cancer cases, and new vaccines are in the pipeline that will improve this record further. Likewise, hepB vaccines are 95 effective at preventing infection and its chronic consequences.

This is particularly the case among women, who show an increased incidence of cervical, uterine and breast cancer however, rates of early detection are still too low as a result of cultural problems and insufficient access to health services.

Cells in laboratory cultures that are resistant to chemotherapies typically lose their resistance when the chemicals are removed. Lung cancer cells that are resistant to the chemotherapy gemcitabine are less proliferative, invasive, and motile than their drug sensitive counterparts.

But it's completely safe, completely non invasive and silent.

On a similar scale, a vaccine to prevent human papilloma virus infection and cervical cancer was tested in almost 30,000 young women. Such studies are very costly, and, by any reasonable standard, the number of patients included in them is grossly excessive.

GENEVA How is it that Rwanda, among the world s poorest countries and still recovering from a brutal civil war is able to protect its teenage girls against cancer more effectively than the G 8 countries? After just one year, Rwanda reported vaccinating more than 93 of its adolescent girls against the human papillomavirus (HPV) by far the largest cause of cervical cancer.

The Government continues to support initiatives to increase access and participation in cervical screening.

To help address the fact that the incidence of and deaths from cervical cancer among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women is significantly and disproportionately high compared to non indigenous women, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Forum has been supported by the Department of Health and Ageing since 2000.
