An amount of 3,000 is provided for minor repairs and maintenance of the Zagreb premises.

Provision is made for the rental of premises ( 75,700), utilities ( 11,400), maintenance supplies ( 7,500), maintenance services ( 7,500) and office alteration and repairs ( 7,200).

The issue of rental and maintenance costs of the premises used by UNITAR in New York and Geneva remains pending.

The requirements for maintenance supplies were estimated at 849,600. Actual requirements in respect of premises amounted to 277,700 owing to the receipt of surplus UNPF supplies during this period. 34. Maintenance services.

6. Lower requirements for maintenance supplies and utilities were the main reason for the unutilized balance of 141,200 under premises accommodation.

26. Rental of premises. Article 19 of the status of forces agreement requires the Government of Cyprus to provide UNFICYP with certain types of premises, as well as to provide for their maintenance. The agreement excludes alterations and renovations for the enhancement of premises, which are paid for by UNFICYP.

The amount of 1,374,700 refers to the rental of premises ( 937,100), utilities, including out of normal working hour charges ( 47,000), and maintenance contracts ( 68,300).

The unspent balance for premises was owing to lower requirements for maintenance services, while the balance under transport operations resulted from lower costs for rental of vehicles and spare parts, repairs and maintenance.

8. As indicated in annex I, operational costs include provisions of 31,300 for rental and maintenance of premises and 25,000 for miscellaneous service contracts.

11. The Board recommends that UNDP prepare a forward plan for maintenance and alterations work to the premises its occupies (para. 84).

IS3.77 The provision of 77,200 for ESCAP, reflecting an increase of 23,800, would cover the cost of maintenance of premises ( 3,500), utilities ( 15,700), rental of equipment ( 10,100), rental and utilization of telephone lines ( 8,400), maintenance of equipment ( 20,800) and other miscellaneous services ( 18,700).

Significant overexpenditures have been noted in the budget lines Established posts ( 561,349), Common staff costs ( 123,609), Maintenance of premises ( 118,062) and Special allowances for judges ( 24,315).

The estimates also provide for general temporary assistance, alterations and maintenance of premises, transport operations, communications, other equipment and spare parts, contractual services, miscellaneous supplies and freight.

With the rainy season under way, the maintenance of the main supply routes and the provision of UNMIL air assets to resupply premises in the sectors have been key priorities.

15. With regard to rental and maintenance of premises, the Advisory Committee urges the Secretary General to make every effort to obtain contributions from the host Government whenever feasible.

The reduction under this category relates to rental of premises ( 624,500), rental of office equipment ( 413,800), rental of vehicles ( 75,900), communications ( 922,800), maintenance of various equipments ( 527,300) and other miscellaneous services ( 377,200).

At mid 1997, work was under way on construction of two more schools to replace dilapidated premises and 13 classrooms to avoid triple shifting, and on comprehensive maintenance of three schools.

No provision has been made for funding from the regular budget other staff support costs, such as those for travel, furnishings, equipment, supplies, printing, communications, maintenance and rental of premises.
