Convention concerning Minimum Age for Admission to Employment (No. 138)

Gabon had ratified the International Labour Organization (ILO) Minimum Age Convention No. 138, which set the minimum age for employment at 14, but its own legislation improved upon that by making 16 the minimum age.

Minimum Marital Age

The ILO Convention (No. 138) concerning Minimum Age for Admission to Employment, 1973, promotes free and compulsory education of good quality up to the minimum age for entering into employment as a key element in the prevention of child labour.

The Committee welcomes the ratification of the Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, 1999 (No. 182) in 2002 and the Minimum Age Convention, 1973 (No. 138) in 1983.

In Bahrain, the minimum age was 19 years.

The ideal situation would be for Paraguay to raise the minimum age for marriage to coincide with the civil age of majority, in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which Paraguay had ratified.

While the previous minimum wage differed for youth under 16 years of age and workers in off road communities, the new minimum wage is the same for everyone regardless of their age or location of work.

The Code provides that the minimum age for marriage with parental authorization is 15 for men and 14 for women and that the minimum age for marriage without such authorization is 21 for men and 18 for women.

Four states raised the minimum age to 18 during the period of the seventh survey.

However, recognizing that the Convention required an equal minimum marriage age for men and women, and that, in practice, women no longer married at 17, the State proposed to amend the Family Law.

Tatmadaw is an all volunteer army, and the minimum age requirement for recruitment is 18 years.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum age requirement are turned away at the recruitment stage.

Currently, the minimum age was 21 for voting, 18 and 16 for marriage, and 16 for criminal responsibility.

However, article 144 of the Civil Code sets the minimum age of marriage for women at 15 years.

(i) To adopt all necessary measures to close the gap between the school leaving age and the minimum age for employment, including by raising the minimum age for employment and or raising the school leaving age when necessary, and to ensure access to free basic education and, wherever possible and appropriate, vocational training for all children liberated from the worst forms of child labour

There is no exception as to the minimum age of marriage. But on average, girls get married with 20 24 years and boys 24 30 years of age.

2 Domestic regulations of every State shall fix a minimum working age, as well as working conditions and hours.

The voting age was 18 years and the minimum age for seeking elective office, whether to Parliament or to local government, was 21 years for both men and women.

While the minimum age for marriage for both boys and girls was set at 16, in practice girls suffered discrimination.

Uruguay was convinced of the importance of implementing the rights of the child, in particular those enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocols and other international human rights instruments, in particular the ILO Minimum Age Convention (No. 138) and the ILO Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention (No. 182).

While noting that the State party has raised the minimum age of criminal responsibility in the Hong Kong SAR, the Committee remains concerned that the age of 10 years is too low.

Ms. Gnacadja stressed the need to adopt legislation to raise the minimum age for marriage for both boys and girls and to ensure that that age was the same for either sex.
