The Negative Way to Growth?

Unemployment is around 10 (still less than half the Spanish rate), and annual GDP growth is around 1 (Spain s growth rate is negative). But the moods in the two countries, as well as their perceptions of Europe and their role in it, contrast starkly.

We were having negative per capita growth.

A back of the envelope calculation suffices to show that, unless the government is prepared to tolerate a further increase in the investment rate, achieving a GDP growth target of 7.5 implies a significant fall in the growth rate of investment. To compensate for the negative impact on GDP growth, and with export growth constrained by weak global demand, consumption must rise even more sharply, which is hard to imagine.

Negative OFDI growth was experienced in 1985, 1989, 1998 and 2002.

We needed to reduce the population growth rate.

The answer depends on two key variables the discount rate and future earnings growth. A lower discount rate and or a higher rate of expected earnings growth would justify higher equity valuations.

Our economy, which had been growing at an average of 7 per cent per annum during the past two decades, is now expected to register a 3 to 4 per cent negative growth rate this year.

So, what happened though, over the course of the last 20 years we went from a 10 percent savings rate to a negative savings rate.

In the last decade, global Internet penetration rate has risen from 21.7 to 48.8 . In developing countries, the growth rate of the Internet penetration rate is double that of developed countries.

Excluding China, there was a general slowdown in growth of service imports by developing countries, mirroring a lower growth rate in their exports.

GDP growth had been negative since 2001, and it had reached a trough of 7.6 per cent in 2003.

This would have a negative impact on the balance of payments, macroeconomic stability and the investment needed for growth.

Today, for a given rate of GDP growth, the corresponding inflation rate is substantially higher than it was over the past two decades. In other words, inflation especially house price inflation has become an important constraint on growth.

Based on these trends and assuming a constant labor participation rate China s potential growth rate over the next decade is likely to hover around 6.9 7.6 , averaging 7.27 . This may be much lower than the 9.4 average growth rate in 1988 2013, but it is more than adequate by global standards.
