The many, costly peacekeeping operations under way in the world, particularly in Africa, seek to secure peace through the disarmament, demobilization and the reintegration of former combatants and through the organization of elections in some countries.

Mr. Musambachime (Zambia) said that Mr. Guéhenno, Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, had provided a comprehensive briefing to Committee members on the problems encountered by the Organization in its peacekeeping operations and that his delegations associated itself with the statement made by the representative of Morocco on behalf of the Non Aligned Movement.

Drawing a distinction between the two types of operation would alleviate the pressure on the United Nations and contributing States for the organization of operations and would encourage more States to become parties to the draft protocol.
