if the assets sold are equity, the total assets, business income and net assets are respectively the product of total assets, business income and net assets of the invested enterprise and the equity percentage of the investment.

However, before graduates flock to private equity, they should know that only the very big funds can use debt to skew returns for insiders in this way, primarily because only they can raise the capital needed to buy well established companies that are rich in fixed assets, and thus in potential collateral. Smaller private equity funds typically buy into younger, smaller companies without such fixed assets, and the leverage in those deals is commensurately less.

And yet there is a major difference between how private equity operates and how a family buys a home. Only a small part of the equity ownership acquired by any private equity fund comes from money provided by the partners who found and operate the fund.

Similar reckless lending practices prevailed in the leveraged buyout market, where private equity firms take over public companies and finance the deals with high debt ratios the leveraged loan market, where banks provide financing to private equity firms and the asset backed commercial paper market, where banks use off balance sheet schemes to borrow very short term.

Article 58The equity instruments refers to the contracts which can prove that a certain enterprise holds the surplus equities of the assets after the deduction of all the debts.

While ownership of bank assets by foreign institutions offers potential opportunities, excessive foreign ownership of bank assets has also, at times, constrained lending to the domestic private sectors and small and medium scale enterprises.

To buy or even to hold risky assets in such a situation is a recipe for financial disaster. So is buying or holding equity in firms that may be holding risky assets, regardless of how safe a firm s stock was previously thought to be.

Domestic resource mobilization, remittances from expatriate workers, private debt and equity flows, and philanthropic contributions exceed official international aid by a wide margin. Private flows are no longer the tail, but the dog that wags the development agenda.

But doesn t the banks ability to raise new equity capital indicate that, regardless of whether the stress tests are reliable, investors believe that their assets value does significantly exceed their liabilities?

Unsustainable private debt problems must be resolved by defaults, debt reductions, and conversion of debt into equity. If, instead, private debts are excessively socialized, the advanced economies will face a grim future serious sustainability problems with their public, private, and foreign debt, together with crippled prospects for economic growth.

Imagine a development bank levering up collateral that comprises post privatization equity retained by the state and other assets (for example, real estate) that could easily be made more valuable (and collateralized) by reforming their property rights. Imagine that it links the European Investment Bank and the European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker s 315 billion ( 350 billion) investment plan with Greece s private sector.

Equity prices and other risky assets have fallen sharply from their peaks of late 2007, but there are still significant downside risks. An emerging consensus suggests that the prices of many risky assets including equities have fallen so much that we are at the bottom and a rapid recovery will occur.

The appearance of an extra 500 billion in demand for risky assets will reduce the quantity of risky assets that other private investors will have to hold. And the sudden appearance of between five and ten different government sponsored funds that make public bids for assets will convey information to the markets about what models other people are using to try to value assets in this environment.

The absence of asset custody mechanism is one of the major reasons to explain the outbreak of risk events in P2P online lending, private equity funds and other sectors.

Thus, a debt equity swap of less than 7.5 of the creditors investment would be enough to compensate for the banks losses. And, even if the banks private depositors, whose claims are 39 of the aggregate balance sheet, were excluded, the debt equity swap necessary to compensate for a loss of up to 100 of the equity would be less than 12 of the creditors investment volume.

Appelbaum and Batt document in impressive detail the way in which top tier private equity funds have been able to earn high returns and ultimately enormous wealth for their founders, while not necessarily helping the companies in which they invest. Interestingly, when returns are measured properly, the outside limited partners in private equity including pension funds, insurance companies, and university endowments also do not necessarily do so well.

Some participants noted that public private partnerships resulted in increased private control of assets and reduced access for the poor to affordable services and called for strengthening the public sector to ensure equitable access to basic goods and services.

Even the nationalization of Yukos s assets may reflect little more than the absence of alternative buyers, given the obvious political obstacle passing those assets on to other domestic private sector players (i.e., oligarchs), and the legal and reputational barriers to foreign investors.

But a new book, Private Equity at Work, by Eileen Appelbaum and Rosemary Batt, explains exactly how a few people have become immensely rich through the shrewd strategic use of debt.

Enhance the role of the private sector in the mobilization of resources for population and development, in monitoring population expenditures and in ensuring that financial targets and equity objectives are met.

The Taylor regime neglected the public sector and encouraged the private GSM cellular provider Lonestar Communication Corporation, in which some of the top functionaries of his Government had substantial equity investment.

I support Geithner s plan to cooperate with private investors in dealing with the banks toxic assets, because they make better business decisions than government bureaucrats. But the Fed s low interest, non recourse loans to buy up toxic assets have not yet caused a stampede of participants.
