Cases documented by women's organizations indicate that approximately 72 per cent of the rape victims are minors.

In another case, warrants were issued in two cases of rape where the victims were minors, aged 4 and 12, on 21 July and 7 August, respectively, in Mpanda commune, Bubanza province.

Few women report rape cases due to cultural reticence or fear of stigmatization, though as a result of intensified sensitization more victims were reported to have come forward in the last few months.

To illustrate the urgent need for appropriate action to help the Congolese people who are the victims of the armed groups, the independent expert has decided to highlight the tragic rape of women, girls and children.

Fifteen rape cases were reported in six provinces, including the gang rape of a young woman in Cibitoke province.
