The Division of Regional Operations subsumes the four regional desks of the former UNSECOORD.

20.8 The subprogramme is under the responsibility of the Department of Operations, which embraces the various regional operations.

Yet we are still making a clear distinction between United Nations led operations and operations conducted by regional organizations.

In recent times, multinational regional forces, both armed and unarmed, have been engaged in conflict and post conflict operations.

The EU is also involved in strengthening the capacities of African regional and subregional organizations through the Peace Facility, which finances operations conducted by regional actors on the continent.

42. Many United Nations agencies have decentralized their operations through increased delegation of authority to the field, combined with setting up or markedly strengthening regional and sub regional offices.

The future of peacekeeping operations is at a strategic turning point where the emphasis must be placed on their regional dimension and on the capacity of regional organizations to assume responsibility for mounting or contributing the most resources to peacekeeping operations to act in their region.

15. Many representatives underlined the need for a regional drug control strategy that would facilitate law enforcement and intelligence operations.

FAO also made significant progress in restructuring to decentralize operations, which is instrumental to gender mainstreaming at the regional level.
