Status of reporting of specific gender statistics

The Statistics Division should take the lead in developing the reporting system.

The focus is on the reporting of statistics on women and men by countries to the international statistical system.

The overall reporting of gender statistics on various topics is strongest in Europe, followed by North and South America.

However, many countries lack the resource base necessary to conduct regular industrial enquiries on short term indicators and structural business statistics, which limits the number of countries reporting industrial statistics to international agencies.

The assessment of progress for the most recent period was partly inconclusive owing to delays in national reporting of the requisite statistics.

In 2006, the Statistics Division will conduct a comprehensive review of country practices in compilation and reporting of international merchandise trade statistics in order to assess their compliance with the current recommendations of the Statistical Commission.

A review of three periods, 1975 1984, 1985 1994 and 1995 2003, indicates that progress in reporting of official national statistics was minimal.

Annual industrial commodity production statistics are disseminated through the Industrial Commodity Statistics Yearbook with a time lag of about two years, while the monthly commodity production statistics are disseminated though the Monthly Bulletin of Statistics with a time lag of a quarter.
