Non agricultural activities include manufacturing, trade, services and transport etc.

Moreover, along with political reform came policy changes aimed at rebalancing the economy. Abolition in 1846 of the Corn Laws, which had propped up the declining agricultural sector, facilitated structural shifts, first toward manufacturing and then toward services, notably financial services.

As it stands, productivity in services is six times lower than in manufacturing. The operations of South Korea s chaebols which dominate production, if not employment should be adjusted to support productivity gains in the increasingly dominant services sector.

The four countries have very different economic structures Russia and Brazil rely on commodities, India on services, and China on manufacturing. Brazil and India are democracies, while China and Russia are decidedly not.

This technology is really going to disrupt the landscape of manufacturing and, I believe, cause a revolution in manufacturing.

Rapid manufacturing is a computer file sent directly from the computer to the manufacturing machine.

Already, services contribute the bulk of GDP in developing countries, even in low income countries where agriculture has traditionally played a big part. Young workers who leave the farm for the cities are increasingly absorbed into urban services jobs instead of manufacturing.

Notable success stories of South African TNCs include AngloGold Ashanti (gold production), Illovo Sugar (sugar production in South Africa and neighbouring countries), Mondi (paper production), Steinhoff (furniture manufacturing) and the MTN group (cellular phone services).

New firms must be created, and modern financial markets are better at speculation and exploitation than they are at providing funds for new enterprises, especially small and medium size companies.
