Without a concerted effort to increase households share of total income and raise consumption s share of aggregate demand, growth of consumer products and services on the supply side will remain inadequate. Given that services are a significant source of incremental employment, their expansion, in particular, would help to sustain inclusive growth.

For starters, services have been gaining ground worldwide, especially in developed economies. From 1970 to 2012, the GDP share of services in the OECD countries increased from 53 to 71 .

WFP's share of common services programme costs in 2004 was US 132,000, including its portion of the cost of two common services adviser posts established for the Eastern Southern Africa region and West Africa.

FDI in services has expanded, with the world's inward stock of FDI in services quadrupling (1990 to 2002) and the share of services in the world's FDI stock rising from one quarter in the 1970s to about 60 per cent in 2002.

Increasing the share of grants in official development assistance could help to ensure that investments in basic water and sanitation services are sustainable.

While the debate about China s near term outlook should hardly be trivialized, the far bigger story is its economy s solid progress on the road to rebalancing namely, a structural shift away from manufacturing and construction activity toward services. In 2014, the services share of Chinese GDP hit 48.2 , well in excess of the combined 42.6 share of manufacturing and construction.

As supply side structural reform is furthered, the share of value added from the services sector in China accounted for 51.6 of GDP in 2017, and contributed 58.8 to GDP growth. The services sector remained the economy s primary impetus.

Investments in services are growing OFDI in computer related industries, information technology and trading activities accounted for the lion's share of Chinese OFDI stock in 2003.

In many developing countries, transport and distribution services contribute an important percentage of GDP (as high as 30 per cent) and account for a large share of employment.

And China s shift to services has only just begun. It should broaden into IT services, healthcare, domestic transportation, and hospitality and leisure, as the sector as a whole climbs toward a 60 65 share of GDP over the next decade.

Over the past decades, the shares of the industrial and services sectors in the region's total GDP have increased significantly, while the share of the agricultural sector has declined.

The HealthNet programme was developed in 1989 to cooperatively share information and communications services to support public health and medical research in the developing world.

And there is plenty more to come. At around 47 of GDP, China s embryonic services sector remains well short of the 60 65 share that a middle income economy typically possesses.

If these countries follow the same path traveled by the advanced economies, agriculture s dominance will give way to industry, which in turn will be supplanted by services, further broadening their role. There is certainly room to grow the share of industry in developing Asia s output surpassed the OECD average in 2010 (41 vs. 24 ), but the share of services still lags by a wide margin (48 vs. 75 ).

In other words, Germany s role in the world economy is shifting from that of a producer to that of a merchant. As a result, its exports contain an ever increasing share of imported goods and services and the share of domestic value added in its exports per unit of output is rapidly declining.

Over the last two decades, the services economy in all countries has gained in importance and contributed a growing share to gross domestic product (GDP) and employment.

Currently, the share of China s traditional industrial economy, which includes energy, transportation, telecommunication, and general services, is still above 70 . This has direct concerns on the national economy and people s livelihood.

This platform enables users to compile and share information on experts in the South who are qualified and available to provide expert services in various development related initiatives.

Services account for a growing share of GDP and employment and play a key role not only in infrastructure building, competitiveness and trade facilitation, but also in poverty reduction and gender equality.

Developed countries remain the main source of outward FDI, while developing countries' share has also grown (from one per cent in 1990 to 10 per cent of global outward FDI services stock in 2002).

At present, expenditures by landlocked developing countries on transport and insurance services as a share of total export earnings are, on average, double that of developing countries overall, and triple that of the developed economies.

Mechanisms will also be strengthened to disseminate and share information on work with youth, youth services organizations and other partners in addressing the concerns of young people at local, national and international levels.

This rebalancing has helped to improve China s income distribution. Indeed, in recent years, labor s share of national income has been on the rise a direct reflection of the decline in manufacturing and expansion in services.

These and other trends have enhanced the participatory process and encourage Member States at a very high level to share their views concerning the context within which UNIDO offers its services.

If some have had an online presence for the last couple of years, only a small share of destinations have so far been able to fully exploit the Internet for marketing and offering services through the web.

Perhaps even more compelling, services share of total global employment reached 42.7 in 2007, well ahead of agriculture (34.9 ) and industry (22.4 ). Many service sector jobs are low paying, precarious, and not covered by formal mechanisms of social protection.
