We undertake to operationalize the World Solidarity Fund established by the General Assembly.

The National Solidarity Fund of Tunisia is a public sector driven fund designed to lift the population in shadow areas out of poverty.

Measures such as the solidarity fund at the United Nations and the Qatar fund perfectly illustrate the importance of South South cooperation for development.

That is why, in December 2002 in Geneva, we proposed the creation of the Global Digital Solidarity Fund.

In that context, the international community should ensure the operationalization of the World Solidarity Fund, established by the General Assembly.

We espouse the obligation to make the World Solidarity Fund, established by the World Summit on Sustainable Development, more efficient.

28. Encourages Member States, international organizations, the private sector, relevant institutions, foundations and individuals to contribute to the World Solidarity Fund

The results would be allocated to development assistance through a solidarity fund which could be coordinated with contributions from other countries.

Commends the continued support by the Islamic Solidarity Fund to finance the main part of the annual budget of the University.

5. Encourages Member States, international organizations, the private sector, relevant institutions, foundations and individuals to contribute to the World Solidarity Fund

(h) We resolve to operationalize the World Solidarity Fund established by the General Assembly and invite those countries in a position to do so to make voluntary contributions to the Fund

In that regard, we would mention the General Assembly's adoption of the Tunisian proposal for the establishment of a World Solidarity Fund.

Unfortunately, the WSIS process still needed to address certain pending issues in this regard, including the project for a Digital Solidarity Fund.

The delegations hoped that the Digital Solidarity Fund would play a very positive role in expanding access to ICT by developing countries.

Requests the Islamic financial institutions, foremost of which are the Islamic Development Bank and the Islamic Solidarity Fund to extend regular financial assistance to the Institute to enable it to continue functioning in the best way and commends in this regard the financial support provided to the Institute by the Islamic Solidarity Fund.

He welcomed the African initiative to establish the Digital Solidarity Fund and the fact that 60 per cent of the project resources of the Fund would be devoted to the least developed countries.

13. In this connection, the recent (1 May 1996) presidential initiative appointing a Secretary of State responsible for the National Solidarity Fund should also be noted.

It is certainly heartening that in many of those initiatives, such as the South fund for development and humanitarian assistance, the action against hunger initiative and the World Solidarity Fund, developing countries themselves have come to the fore in making contributions.
