The share of developing countries' trade increased from 18.5 per cent in 1990 to 22.5 per cent in 2004, with an export value worth 485 billion.

In Africa, the share of manufacturing exports of about 30 per cent in 2000 represented an increase of only 10 percentage points compared with the 1980 share, while the continent's share of world merchandise exports fell from 6.3 per cent in 1980 to 2.5 per cent in 2000 in value terms.

The tables below show the value of national income at market prices and the per capita share in that income, as well as the GDP value at market prices.

5. While the growth in Africa apos s share of global manufacturing value added was stagnating, in 1995 some African countries had registered a 5 to 9 per cent growth rate in manufacturing value added.

For six of them (CZE, DEU, FIN, GBR, NLD, USA) this share was higher than 95 per cent, the United States of America having the highest value among them with 98.7 per cent.

In the SW, while the share of manufacturing sector decreased to 39 per cent of approved OFDI equity, that of service industries rose to 60 per cent of equity value and 52 per cent of OFDI approvals (table 2).

Supermarkets accounted only for 10 per cent of the market, although both their share and their value are expected to grow rapidly in the years to come.

The value of world exports of iron and steel (Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) position 67) doubled in the period 1985 2002 from US 70.3 billion to US 143.2 billion, while their share in world total merchandise exports fell from 3.64 per cent to 2.27 per cent and their share in world commodities exports rose by 0.5 per cent (from 10.2 per cent in 1985 to 10.7 per cent in 2002).

The largest share of developing countries' exports is accounted for by Asia, which represents 77 per cent of the total exports of developing countries (with a value of 2.3 trillion).

The United States accounts for about 75 per cent of the world market in recombinant products, the majority of which are biopharmaceuticals, and generates 31 per cent of the value of world drug production, a share that is growing.

74. Mr. MAHAGU (Kenya) said that although the developing countries apos share of world manufacturing value added had been 19.7 per cent in 1995, the growth in sub Saharan Africa had been insignificant, only 1.6 per cent in 1995.

In value terms, the share of developing countries in world iron and steel exports (SITC position 67 Iron and steel) increased from 14 per cent in 1985 to 25 per cent in 2002, reflecting an average annual increase in developing country steel exports of 7.9 per cent.
