The diversity of ageing in the region means that different policy responses are called for in different countries depending on their current and expected levels of ageing.

Second World Assembly on Ageing The LWV attended the UN Second World Assembly on Ageing meeting in Madrid held April 2 12, 2002 and the NGO Forum on Ageing held April 5 9, 2002 and spoke as a member of a panel at the Forum.

Encourages the international community to support national efforts to provide funding for research and data collection initiatives on ageing in order to better understand the challenges and opportunities presented by population ageing and provide policymakers with more accurate and more specific information on gender and ageing

The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing adopted at the Second World Assembly on Ageing in 2002 had been extremely useful in that it served as a model for the international community in dealing with the situation of older persons and the question of ageing.

The Commission also encouraged Member States to include both ageing specific policies and ageing mainstreaming efforts in their review and appraisal of the Madrid Plan of Action and in their national strategies, bearing in mind the importance of mainstreaming the issue of ageing into global agendas.
