Poverty, extreme inequality and public corruption have fuelled authoritarian rule and violence for decades.

As Russian President Vladimir Putin s corrupt and authoritarian rule demonstrates every day, that transition is far from finished. Yet there is some good news.

After decades of authoritarian rule, citizens, frustrated with discredited institutions and paralyzed political parties, have begun to employ social media to organize civil resistance.

Such measures were not limited to states of emergency or authoritarian regimes, but had also been applied in open societies characterized by transparency and the rule of law.

As the Muslim Brotherhood s rule became increasingly authoritarian, it trampled on the ideals and aspirations of the Tahrir Square revolution that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

In his first term, Putin appeared to be an authoritarian reformer, undertaking substantial market reforms, such as introducing a 13 flat income tax. But in his second term, Putin was simply authoritarian, undertaking no economic or social reforms worth mentioning.

Or they're responding to censorship requests by authoritarian regimes that do not reflect consent of the governed.

The Committee notes that Lithuania is still in the process of transition to democracy after many years of authoritarian rule and that there remain outdated legislation and a number of institutions which may be detrimental to the implementation of human rights and which will take time to reform.

And this actually fits with another interesting theory about what's happening in authoritarian states and in their cyberspace.
