Coastal zone and marine ecosystems Coral reef protection was the most common response option reported by many small island developing States to counter the adverse effects of climate change.

Policy options for adequate monitoring systems and response strategies for climate change impacts on terrestrial and marine ecosystems Policy frameworks for implementing adaptation measures and response strategies in the context of coastal zone management, disaster preparedness, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, with a view to integrating climate change impact information into national planning processes.

(c) Coastal and marine resource issues should be addressed through the adoption of integrated coastal area management for the sustainable development of the marine environment and resources, including fisheries and aquaculture at the national and regional levels

Iceland, like many other coastal States, has for many years been applying area restrictions and closures as one of its fisheries management tools.

Some delegations expressed the view that where no regional fisheries management organization exists, coastal States should have the right and duty to adopt conservation measures.

Likewise, the Tribunal is empowered to order provisional measures pending agreement between coastal States and fishing States as concerns the conservation and management of straddling stocks.

Formulation and implementation of improved solid waste management programmes in small rural communities to prevent litter from escaping into rivers and the marine and coastal environment

Protection and management of ecosystems that provide water storage and coastal protection could also reduce risks and impacts from natural disasters, such as floods and tsunamis.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea recognizes the responsibility of coastal States for the sustainable management of living resources in their maritime zones.

Under the Mauritius Strategy, CARICOM States commit themselves to carrying out further implementation of the Programme of Action in areas such as integrated ocean and coastal management, maritime delimitation, the management of coral reefs and associated ecosystems, the development and implementation of waste management strategies and the strengthening of sustainable and responsible fisheries management mechanisms.

42. Encourages coastal States to enhance their national capacity and establish or improve their marine management systems in order to promote integrated marine management, the protection of the marine environment and ecosystem, and the sustainable development and utilization of marine resources, and invites the relevant agencies of the United Nations system and regional organizations to take effective measures to assist the coastal States in this regard

ACSAD is also working to increase communication and liaison between the north and south Mediterranean coasts as concerns soil degradation and land management through its MED coastal project.

Recalling that the role of international cooperation and coordination on a bilateral basis and, where applicable, within a subregional, interregional, regional or global framework is to support and supplement the national efforts of coastal States to promote the integrated management and sustainable development of coastal and marine areas,

Marine litter activities in many of the countries of the Wider Caribbean region and in particular for the small island developing States are limited to periodic beach clean up and community clean up exercises that are coordinated by local NGOs, schools, private sector organizations, dive associations, tourism authorities, hotels, solid waste management agencies, community groups, environmental departments, coastal zone agencies and or departments of fisheries.

On the basis of the assessment and the guidelines prepared, the MED POL Programme developed a pilot project for coastal litter management in a number of locations in Lebanon.

North Carolina's coastlands, like coastal areas around the world, are threatened by rising sea levels caused by human induced climate change. Yet in 2012, land developers convinced the state legislature to bar the use of scientific evidence on rising sea levels in the state's coastal management policies, at least until 2016.

While many small island developing States have integrated the management of coastal and marine resources into broader ocean management strategies since the entry into force of UNCLOS, the implementation of the Convention continues to be impeded by financial constraints and lack of capacity.
