In this context, let me express our support for the Secretary General apos s idea of holding a United Nations conference on all aspects of the illicit arms trade in order to seek a global consensus on monitoring and controlling illicit arms transfers and their links with trafficking in other contraband goods.

On 5 June, in San Pedro Saquetepéquez, San Marcos, a large scale police operation was carried out to search business premises for contraband. This operation was marked by the excessive number of police officers involved, the abuse of authority and the lack of proportion between the aim of the operation and the degree of force used.

The Parties shall ensure close cooperation among their law enforcement and other competent agencies with a view to combating terrorism, transboundary organized crime, illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and their precursors, nuclear materials, radioactive, explosive or toxic substances, weapons and ammunition, and contraband in objects of cultural or historical value and licensed materials.

Discussions centred on three topics (a) the seizure by Yemeni authorities of a contraband arms shipment that was being transported by a dhow across the Gulf of Aden and destined for Somalia, and arms smuggling networks, in general, (b) the Government's strategies and plans for dealing with illegal arms and (c) round trip flights by Government military aircraft from Yemen to Somalia during July 2005.
