Several proposals were made with a view to strengthening collaboration and cooperation and enhancing the work of the functional commissions. For example

UNODC has also collected and promoted best practices in policing and facilitating cross border law enforcement cooperation.

Progress towards the goals thus set is reviewed in detail each year by the functional commissions of the Economic and Social Council, while the Council itself takes a cross cutting, integrated view.

39. As agreed in Economic and Social Council resolution 1997 61 of 25 July 1997, cooperation among functional commissions should be supported and enhanced by the Bureau of the Council with the assistance of the respective secretariats of the functional commissions.

In 2004, the JLG prepared a paper on options for enhanced cooperation among the three Rio Conventions which tried to identify cross cutting issues for cooperation.

Migration, asylum and border officials from 10 countries were now participating in the Söderköping cross border cooperation initiative.
