PRINCETON The alternatives for Europe s currency, the euro, seem increasingly limited to a desperate muddling through or a chaotic collapse. But there is a bolder and more productive approach that relies on past experience with multiple currencies.

In hindsight, it was a mistake to believe in the euro s spontaneous community creating power. Though there clearly is a link between currency areas and political communities (consider the dissolution of the ruble zone at the time of the Soviet Union s collapse), it is political community that creates the solidarity needed to foster currency linkages, not vice versa.

A more competitive currency would be welcome just as the sterling s collapse since 2008 has lifted UK exports, a weaker euro would help Mediterranean economies regain competitiveness for price sensitive exports. A fiscal devaluation slashing payroll taxes and replacing the revenues with a higher VAT would also help.

It is naive beyond description to think that having blocked this source of financial collapse, you have blocked all possible sources of financial collapse.

And it's pushing the ecosystem close to collapse.

Historical precedents indicate that forcing disparate nations and states to unite under a single idea whether communism in the Soviet Union, socialism in Yugoslavia, or a shared currency in the eurozone generates centrifugal forces that can trigger the union s collapse.
