Such services may include informal ICT based training and specific applications in areas such as e health, e business, e government and e learning.

In the year 2004, UNITAR trained over 950 debt and finance managers using the e learning training approach.

A mandatory community level e learning gender sensitivity training course has been developed, accompanied by a message from the new Administrator.

Thus far, 450 e learning centres had been opened throughout the country, providing training opportunities to students in rural and urban areas.

Distance learning and new training technologies.

As of 31 July 2005, two six week e learning courses had been completed, training a total of 404 participants from over 70 countries.

Efforts focused on building capacity in these countries, including the establishment of Internet training centres for e learning and strengthening regulatory and policy frameworks.

The number of beneficiaries had increased with the use of e learning in an increasing number of courses and, finances permitting, short courses on certain aspects of training developed at UNITAR would be made available on CD ROM.

Secondary vocational training institutions in the 2003 2004 school year numbered 50, and higher learning institutions, 38.

Efforts have been made to increase basic training for the less educated segments of the population, as well as work related ongoing training and workplace learning.

The Subcommittee noted the secretariat's programme in capacity building and human resources development in ICT, e government, e business, e learning, e health, e environment and natural resources management, providing access to ICT in rural communities through community e centres, and knowledge management and networking.

According to Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 73 of the students of e learning have got jobs.

The secretariat was also preparing guidelines on best practices in e commerce legislation and a distance learning version of the Legal Aspects of E Commerce course.

Library staff will need training in up to date coaching and training techniques in order to work more effectively with users and participate in United Nations learning programmes.

The Department of Peacekeeping Operations is encouraging individual United Nations volunteers to participate in its training, learning and capacity building initiatives.
