UNICEF and WHO are active partners in the UNU project on Overcoming Critical Micronutrient Deficiencies.

80. The UNU Overcoming Critical Micronutrient Deficiencies project has achieved a major breakthrough in the control of iron deficiency.

There are now a number of nutrition programmes in place intended to deal with protein energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies among children.

144. UNU efforts continued in 1995 in the area of identifying and promoting measures to control iron deficiency, the most prevalent and neglected of the micronutrient deficiencies.

The figure is all the more unfathomable, given that, alongside this massive wastage and loss, 840 million people experience chronic hunger on a daily basis. Many millions more suffer from silent hunger malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.

More research is also needed to improve the nutritional quality of staple foods by fortifying them with iron, vitamin A, and zinc to help solve widespread micronutrient deficiencies. The limited growth in financial and human resource allocations to the programme over the last decade have widened the disparity between UNRWA standards and those of the host authorities, severely stretched the capacity of the health programme system, and prevented the Agency from upgrading and expanding primary health care facilities and adequately addressing psychosocial health, micronutrient deficiencies, disabilities and cancer prevention and control.
