What is peculiar about populist politicians is that they can do so openly and with a clean conscience. After all, if only their supporters are really the people, everyone else is undeserving.

Politicians are universally reviled. Mainstream parties, desperate to remain relevant, are caught in a vice, forced to choose between pandering to extremism and the risk of being overwhelmed by populist, anti establishment movements.

Charismatic politicians act by polarizing, galvanizing, and mobilizing supporters routine politics, by contrast, requires maintaining a low profile and being willing to strike compromises. Europe today does not need inspirational leaders who can whip up a populist frenzy.

Now, they trade up the politicians every time.

And finally, we need to really reward politicians.

Are politicians making good decisions on my behalf?

It is similarly misguided to think that populist politicians, once in power, will not be able to govern effectively, because they have emerged from protest parties whose agendas are defined entirely by what they oppose. Rather, what is distinctive about populists in power is that they attend only to their clientele (the rest of the population is utterly undeserving) and ride roughshod over checks and balances.

But what politicians need is a range of options.

Great creativity can make politicians electable, or parties unelectable.
