The semi retirement pension scheme was introduced with effect from 1 January 1987.

Foreign nationals living and working in Denmark are therefore entitled to semi retirement pension, if the conditions are otherwise satisfied.

In such cases the retirement pension is calculated on the basis of each agreement and varies from one country to another.

Semi retirement pension totals 1 37 of the basic amount for each hour by which the weekly working hours are reduced.

The Department of Pensions has devised a scheme to make available the commuted pension cheque on the day of retirement itself.

Persons who have reached the retirement age pursuant to the Law On State Pensions of 2 November 1995, as participants of the pension scheme have the right to the old age pension.

These staff members would include those who continue to be employed after retirement age, those who have retired and rejoined the Pension Fund as contributing members after more than six months of continuous service and those who have elected to receive their pension benefits as a withdrawal settlement upon retirement.

Since the right to take a standard retirement pension comes five years earlier for women than for men, women also have the right to take a preferential pension five years earlier than men.

A retirement pension is awarded five years earlier than the generally established retirement age for workers who do other kinds of heavy work (list No. 2, approved by Decision of the Government, of 31 December 2002, No. 521).

The purpose of the semi retirement pension scheme is to provide actively employed people between the ages of 60 and 66 with a possibility to prepare a gradual retirement from the labour market before becoming full time pensioners.

The United Kingdom on behalf of Hong Kong reserves the right to apply all Hong Kong legislation and the rules of pension schemes affecting retirement pensions, survivors benefits and other benefits in relation to death or retirement (including retirement on grounds of redundancy), whether or not derived from a social security scheme.

The operation of the pension scheme of the first tier is based on insurance principles the pension amount is based on the notional pension capital that has been accrued during the person's working life, i.e., information about contribution payments made for pension insurance that is divided by the projected life expectancy at the respective age upon retirement.
