Ms. Matsuo de Claverol (Paraguay) said that her delegation welcomed the substantial progress made by the Commission on the topic Shared natural resources .

It hoped that the current focus on transboundary groundwaters would be expanded to include other shared natural resources such as oil and gas.

Lastly, Israel considered that the issue of shared natural resources should be resolved through direct bilateral negotiations taking into consideration all significant factors.

It is necessary for States to cooperate in the field of the environment concerning the conservation and harmonious utilization of natural resources shared by two or more States.

The main natural resources are natural gas, coal, salt and iron.

First, the draft articles proposed by the Commission covered only aquifers, which seemed to preclude the possibility of developing a comprehensive set of rules governing all shared natural resources.
