Denmark elected a center left government committed to higher government spending financed by new taxes on the rich. And Greece has just voted for a new property tax to help close its yawning fiscal deficit.

We strongly support the proposal for the establishment of a Peacebuilding Commission, since this will go a long way in filling a yawning gap in the consolidation of sustainable peace and security in post conflict countries, particularly in Africa.

Huge tax cuts and rising military spending have fueled an enormous rise in imports, and therefore a yawning trade deficit now accompanies America s weak fiscal position. But US politicians are blaming China and other countries for unfair trade, even threatening them with sanctions.

Without sanctions to police global imbalances, the French step forward will take us halfway across a yawning chasm. In mid air, with neither firm ground below nor enough momentum to make it to the other side, is not where the global economy should be.

After peaking in the early 1970s, real (inflation adjusted) median earnings of full time workers aged 25 64 stagnated, partly owing to a slowdown in productivity growth and partly because of a yawning gap between productivity and wage growth.

On the contrary, the World Bank is a global public institution. But, while the G 7 countries, which dominate voting at the Bank, all declare their commitment to democracy and good governance and espouse promoting them as one of their central objectives there is a yawning gap between what they preach and what they practice.

DUBAI No visitor to the Middle East can avoid noticing the yawning gap between the educational, entrepreneurial, and occupational aspirations of the region s young people and the harsh reality that deprives so many of them of a positive future. Indeed, in the Middle East, half of those aged 18 25 are either unemployed or underemployed.

Signs of the American economy s perilous condition are everywhere from yawning fiscal and current account deficits to plummeting home prices and a feeble dollar. But something that shows up in none of the economic indicators may be driving many of them the deterioration of American management, which is undermining not only many of America s great enterprises, but also its legendary spirit of enterprise.

If recession drags on and Americans continue to blame trade agreements erroneously for growing unemployment, falling wages, and yawning inequality, opposition to these deals will grow. Instead of waiting for the pressure to mount, the next president would do well to preempt it with an ambitious agenda on free trade reform that would benefit everyone.

The continent s fastest growing economies are those that have been willing and able to allow yawning external gaps from 2000 to 2013 26 of GDP, on average, in Liberia, 17 in Mozambique, 14 in Chad, 11 in Sierra Leone, and 7 in Ghana. Rwanda s current account has deteriorated steadily, with the deficit now exceeding 10 of GDP.

Two more positive notes for 2011 America seems finally to have awakened to the yawning gap between the rich and the rest between the top 1 and everyone else. And youth led protest movements, from the Arab Spring to the Spanish indignados and the Occupy Wall Streeters, have made clear that something is very wrong with the capitalist system.

Some of the lessons about the need for prudential regulation of the financial system were lost in the Reagan Thatcher era, when the appetite for massive deregulation was created in part by the flaws in Europe s social welfare model. Those flaws were reflected in yawning fiscal deficits, regulatory overkill, and a lack of economic dynamism that led to sclerotic growth then and the eurozone s sovereign debt crisis now.

The main risk in 2006 is that America s long brewing problems come to a head globally investors, finally taking heed of the large structural fiscal deficit, the yawning trade gap, and the high level of household indebtedness, may pull money out of the US in a panic. Alternatively, rising interest rates and a downturn in the real estate market could so weaken consumer demand that the economy slips into recession, squeezing exporters in other countries that depend on the US market.

Much of the concern over the past few years has centered on America s yawning current account and fiscal deficits, and its effort to get China to let the yuan float more freely against the dollar. China, by contrast, sees its growth as tied to a stable currency, and may not want to introduce a more flexible exchange rate regime, even after the 2.1 revaluation in July, pending alleviation of structural problems for which it is extremely difficult to set a timetable.

But real wages climbed 154 for the top 1 of wage earners and 39 for the top 5 , while real wages stagnated for the bottom 20th percentile of workers and fell for the bottom tenth. Indeed, inequality in labor compensation has been the largest driver of yawning income inequality, except at the very top of the income distribution, where capital income has been more important.
