COPENHAGEN Several thousand officials from 194 countries just gathered in Cancún, Mexico, for yet another global climate summit. Dissatisfied with the pace of climate diplomacy, many individuals are now wondering what they can do about climate change on their own.

ADDIS ABABA At the climate change summit in Copenhagen last December, political leaders expressed a strong will to urgently combat global warming. As we approach the next climate change summit in Cancún, Mexico, this December, the international community must deliver concrete results and move forward to address the challenge.

AMSTERDAM During the COP15 climate summit in Copenhagen, world leaders have been negotiating the future of our planet. All the signs suggest that they are unlikely to sign a global climate treaty.

Paris recently experienced humanity at its worst. The climate summit will be an opportunity to show it at its best.

The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Beijing featured several important agreements as well. At the top of the list is the announcement of a US China bilateral climate deal, which helps to smooth the path toward the crucial United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP21) in Paris next year.

More recently, at the 2005 United Nations World Summit, world leaders had reiterated the importance of international efforts to combat climate change.

For the European Union, the leading authority in international climate policy, the outcome of the Copenhagen summit was particularly disappointing. After years of negotiation and numerous scientific assessment reports, delegations had the highest expectations for concluding a comprehensive climate treaty.

Building on a series of innovative initiatives, UNF, the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies and UNFIP hosted the Second Institutional Investor Summit on Climate Risk in May 2005.

But confrontation is not the whole story. Promising steps have been made in two critical areas nuclear non proliferation, especially through the nuclear deal with Iran, and the fight against climate change, exemplified in the encouraging preparations for the current climate summit in Paris.

DURBAN Before the Copenhagen climate change summit two years ago, the two of us sat together in Cape Town to listen to five African farmers from different countries, four of whom were women, tell us how climate change was undermining their livelihoods. Each explained how floods and drought, and the lack of regular seasons to sow and reap, were outside their normal experience.

To be sure, as with the recent gathering in Bonn, expectations for the November climate conference in Warsaw are so low that there is almost no room for failure. But, with climate negotiators promising to deliver the global agreement that they could not deliver in Copenhagen in 2009, the December 2015 summit in Paris is almost certain to be another debacle.

All this may lead some to wonder why time consuming international negotiations and UN climate summits are needed at all. But the fact is that this groundswell has in large part been catalyzed by the existing targets, timetables, and innovative mechanisms of the UN climate treaties, and not least by the momentum generated around the often criticized 2009 Copenhagen summit.

COPENHAGEN Politicians and commentators are understandably pessimistic about the chances of an international deal on carbon cuts emerging from the United Nations summit in Mexico this December. Nothing has been resolved since the Copenhagen climate talks fell apart last year.

This climate of freedom and national harmony will create conditions favourable to the success of the democratic transition process and to the mobilization of all Mauritanian citizens in achieving the MDGs, the purpose of the Summit that brings us together today.
