Citizens are becoming increasingly disenchanted with European elites and supra national institutions such as the European Commission, which impose rules and regulations that conflict with their countries' economic interests and sovereignty. Voters are restless, as the Greek election result demonstrated.

But Europe still has a long way to go, which is apparent from the fact that only a minority of European citizens followed the campaign. A supra national political space can develop only if European politics gains visibility, influence, and credibility.

Today, European citizens are being blackmailed by attorneys, indicted and unjustly found guilty by United States courts, which boast about their impartiality, under such illegalities as the Helms Burton Act.

Similarly, European citizens should have demanded that their governments refuse even to consider transferring private losses to them. But they failed to do so, and the transfer was effected soon after.

For southern European countries, joining the euro was explicitly or implicitly a way to force their citizens to accept a degree of fiscal discipline that they were incapable of adopting on their own. But was this a democratic decision, or one that an enlightened elite forced upon its unwitting citizens?

Northern European countries, which have ample room to increase wages and implement expansionary policies, must do so. This would directly benefit Northern European citizens themselves, while helping to keep the euro down and stimulate growth and adjustment in Southern Europe and the global economy as a whole.
