David Kelley on human centered design

The first of those is that design is human centered.

We conducted months of user research overseas, trying to think like designers, human centered design.

And in my own practice, from product to ApproTEC, it's really exciting that we're taking a more human centered approach to design, that we're including behaviors and personalities in the things we do, and I think this is great.

But something's happened in the last 18 years since Richard started TED, and that's that people like us I know people in other places have caught onto this for a long time, but for us, we've really just started ... we've kind of climbed Maslow's hierarchy a little bit and so we're now focused more and more on human centered design, human centeredness in an approach to design.

If anything, we live in a time when traditionally human centered concerns like rights have been extended to animals, if not nature as a whole. Rather, the problem is whether there is anything distinctive about being human that makes special demands of higher education.

That bigness should be centered on oneself, not in terms of money, not in terms of power you wield, not in terms of any status that you can command in the society, but it should be centered on oneself.
