The more democratic our societies have been, the more equal they have been becoming.

But in the more equal societies, it rises to 60 or 65 percent.

What's changed is we now can look at the evidence, we can compare societies, more and less equal societies, and see what inequality does.

Human societies got larger, denser, more interconnected.

And you have more choice driven societies.

Kids do worse in the more unequal societies.

And the more unequal societies are more likely also to retain the death penalty.

All languages are equal, but English is more equal than the others.

Our globalizing world increasingly compels our societies to become more interdependent.

Maybe, just maybe, less might equal more.

We need to see more equal burden sharing.

Such efforts have resulted in the establishment of more sustainable systems and a more protective environment in some societies.

Our modern Western societies are more complex than before, in this time of migration.

It's perfectly possible to create these social pressures which lead to more egalitarian societies.

Don't expect to get any more awards, job offers or positions in scholarly societies.

It has been observed that corruption, though a universal problem, is more present in some societies than in others, causing monumental devastation on the development efforts of these societies.

The material well being of our societies will be achieved when more people work and each of those workers is more productive.

We work to promote healthy vibrant societies, to ameliorate human suffering, to promote a more thoughtful, substantive, empathic world order.

Reforming the rule of law and re establishing criminal justice systems have become even more essential to post conflict societies.

So, some societies, for subtle environmental reasons, are more fragile than others. And then finally, another generalization. I'm now teaching a course at UCLA, to UCLA undergraduates, on these collapses of societies. What really bugs my UCLA undergraduate students is, how on earth did these societies not see what they were doing?

Well I'm here to suggest there's a better way, that less might actually equal more.
