Financial services in the national accounts

Countries have long used national income accounts, with GDP as the main indicator, to describe economic performance. A more accurate portrait of the wealth of nations must account not only for income, but also for natural and social assets.

Indeed, not only has government spending been rising as a share of income so, too, has spending across many service sectors. Today, the service sector, including the government, accounts for more than 70 of national income in most advanced economies.
