The Executive Secretary, in agreement with the Department of Management, has taken over most of the responsibility for financial, procurement and personnel management of the secretariat.

The practical aspects of concerted Department of Safety and Security Department of Peacekeeping Operations action with respect to security management arrangements for civilian personnel in the field are concentrated in the key areas of security policies and standards, information sharing and risk assessment, operations, education (including training), and resources management (including planning, financing and personnel and equipment management).

In the area of integration, the Department had been cooperating with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations with a view to introducing a unified security management system for all civilian personnel.

The Under Secretary General establishes departmental policies and guidelines, deals with specific policy and management issues and problems, and is responsible for the administrative, financial and personnel management of the Department.
