It is impossible to infer solely from an increase in the volume of transactions how the price of oil will change. The price will fall if the increase resulted from growth in supply, and it will rise if the increase resulted from growth in demand.

If the oil price stays at 40 a barrel, expect it to have next to no effect on short term world GDP growth. But if the oil price remains at or near 60 a barrel, expect everyone's forecasts of GDP growth to be reduced by 1 per year.

Today, for a given rate of GDP growth, the corresponding inflation rate is substantially higher than it was over the past two decades. In other words, inflation especially house price inflation has become an important constraint on growth.

The producer price index (PPI) has been in negative territory for 39 consecutive months, since February 2012. The growth of China s consumer price index (CPI), though still positive, has also been falling steadily, from 6.5 in July 2011 to 1.2 in May.

It all starts when some imbalance causes overall inflation or some key price typically the exchange rate, but also power, water, and gasoline to come under upward pressure. The government then uses its coercive power to keep a lid on price growth.

For this reason statistical data for certain years are deceptive they are, for example, the result of considerable price growth in a given year not yet followed by wage growth or, on the contrary, high wage growth, in reaction to the restrained rate of increase in wages in previous years.

Now growth in home prices is weakening in some of these cities. The rate of price growth in London and New York slowed sharply over the past year, to only about a 1 real increase in the second quarter of 2004.

All efforts to stimulate job creation or economic growth with easy money will merely boost price growth, offsetting any effect on unemployment. Monetary policy must therefore focus solely on hitting inflation targets, and central bankers should be exonerated of any blame for unemployment.

Developing countries are contributing not only to world growth but also to macro stabilization policies worldwide, in particular through greater internal price stability and significant deregulation of financial markets.
