This is a relatively modest prediction. Without automatic stabilizers or a strong financial stability framework underpinned by deposit insurance, coping with the downside risks of the potentially destabilizing financial reforms that the government is pursuing will be difficult enough a credit shock could prove disastrous.

Developed countries and multilateral financial institutions can act to ensure the coherence and consistency of the international monetary, financial and trading systems through strong coordination of macroeconomic policies among the leading industrialized countries so as to achieve greater global stability and reduced exchange rate volatility.

CAMBRIDGE In the early days of the global financial crisis, there was some optimism that developing countries would avoid the downturn that advanced industrial countries experienced. After all, this time it was not they that had engaged in financial excess, and their economic fundamentals looked strong.

For years to come, the private banking sector will be preoccupied with the consequences of the financial crisis. As a result, investors value a strong public partner now more than ever before.

They therefore have strong incentives to evaluate financing requests carefully, and to assist borrowers in bad times, thus reducing the pressure to sell assets at fire sale prices and minimizing the likelihood of financial contagion. Finally, the Islamic financial framework protects deposit balances, and prevents excessive credit growth.
