Developing countries' exports grew faster than total world exports, which expanded by 20 per cent.

World exports of finished and semi finished steel increased from 245.4 Mt. in 1996 to 337.9 Mt. in 2003.

Their share in world merchandise exports increased from 24 per cent in 1990 to 33 per cent in 2004.

Over the last 25 years, Africa's share of world exports has been declining, from approximately 6 per cent in 1980 to approximately 2 per cent in 2004, for the continent as a whole. Sub Saharan Africa's share of world exports is estimated at 1.5 per cent.

3. The report gave very encouraging figures for the manufacturing value added of developing countries and their share of world manufacturing exports.

But these declines in share of commodities in world trade do not reflect an absolute diminution in the value of commodity exports.

Moreover, France will enjoy large gains from exports to the fast growing emerging world, since it produces more competitive high value added goods than, for example, southern European countries, whose exports are closer to those of the leading emerging countries.

World Bank data indicate that tariffs imposed by developing countries on exports from other developing countries are often set at above average levels.

26. Many developing countries were concerned that, in spite of the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO), resistance to their exports had intensified.

At some stage, the world may no longer catch a cold when the US sneezes, but that is far from being true now. Twenty one percent of China s exports and 23 of the EU s exports to non member countries go to the US.
