Developing countries' exports grew faster than total world exports, which expanded by 20 per cent.

This does not mean that the German made share of exports is falling in absolute terms. It only means that the total volume of German exports has been rising faster than the total German value added in those exports.

With the exception of Qatar, this led to an increase in the share of oil exports in total 2004 exports.

Qatar's share of oil in total exports has continuously declined, while its exports of liquid natural gas have increased substantially.

Various measures can be used to define the dynamism of a specific product's evolution in global exports over time, including the rate of growth over alternative periods, the degree of growth stability, and changes of a product's share in total exports.

Moreover, in economies with declining shares of investment and manufacturing value added, a stagnant or falling share of manufactures in total exports was often the norm, even as the overall composition of developing country exports was shifting rapidly towards manufactures, including more skill and technology intensive goods.

According to UNCTAD, in 2003, the shares of landlocked developing countries in total exports and imports of world merchandise remained very small, 0.57 per cent and 0.64 per cent, respectively.

The Common Data Set (CDS) on total merchandise exports and imports by country, developed through a joint data ownership with shared responsibilities, was launched in 2001.

As reported in the previous working paper (A AC.109 2004 7), figures for 2002 show that total imports amounted to 609.7 million (up from 590.7 million in 2001) and total exports to 428.7 million (up from 362 million in 2001).

This reflects inter alia the dependence of the Palestinian economy on a single market (Israel), which is also observed in the importance of each partner in the total trade of the other. As shown in table 1, while trade with Israel represented 67 per cent of total Palestinian exports and imports, the latter represented only 2.3 per cent of total Israeli trade.

The value of world exports of iron and steel (Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) position 67) doubled in the period 1985 2002 from US 70.3 billion to US 143.2 billion, while their share in world total merchandise exports fell from 3.64 per cent to 2.27 per cent and their share in world commodities exports rose by 0.5 per cent (from 10.2 per cent in 1985 to 10.7 per cent in 2002).

Although the total value of imports and exports fell year on year, the export data enjoyed growth. This is the fifth consecutive month for export to achieve growth since March this year.

The third priority was international trade and trade facilitation, and the main reason for the small share of landlocked developing countries in total world exports and imports was excessive transit transport costs.

With the exception of Central America, rising commodity prices have improved the external accounts and fiscal positions of Latin American countries. Revenue from natural resource exports represented 25 of total income in the public sector in 2008.

Apart from UN Comtrade, the Statistics Division also maintains a series on total merchandise exports and imports within its Monthly Bulletin of Statistics database, which are sourced from the IMF International Financial Statistics and national publications.

The strong growth of developing countries as a group has been attributed to the rapid growth of exports of goods and services.1 The increases in income, exports and reserves, together with a slower rise in total debt stocks, led to improvements in several traditional debt indicators for this group in 2004 (based on estimated debt statistics for that year).

Other steps were subsequently taken, such as the restriction of oil shipments to Cuba by United States transnationals, the paralysing of industrial plants, the prohibition of exports to Cuba and the partial and later total elimination of the sugar quota.

In the 10 years between 1993 and 2003, China s and Hong Kong s exports to Mexico rose from 1.12 of total Mexican imports to 5.8 . Since 2003, China has become Mexico s most important trading partner after the United States.

First, sea borne trade routes, which account for nearly 85 of the European Union s total exports and imports, must be kept free and safe. And, second, European countries must maintain the capacity to deal with any major security crisis.

There is no evidence of timber exports.

Sub Saharan Africa's merchandise exports stood at 146 billion in 2004, accounting for a modest share of 1.6 per cent of world exports.
