Permit me to begin by indicating that my delegation subscribes fully to the statement to be made shortly by the representative of the United Kingdom on behalf of the European Union.

During the reporting period, the observer delegation of the African Union to MINURSO, led by its senior representative, Ambassador Yilma Tadesse (Ethiopia), continued to provide support and cooperation to the Mission.

The election was monitored by 436 international electoral observers, including a United States presidential observer delegation and representatives of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, ECOWAS, the African Union, the European Union, the Carter Center, the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, the European Federation of Liberian Associations and the West African Civil Society Forum.

In addition, on 17 February 2005 while in Mogadishu on an assessment mission of the security situation, the African Union delegation narrowly missed being hit by a roadside bomb explosion that killed two Somalis and wounded six others.
