Population ageing

The rapid ageing of the population in the region, in particular the ageing of the older population, would increase expenditure on public health.

Rapid ageing of the population, with a shrinking labour force, will impose pressure on public expenditure on pensions as the number of retirees increases while the number of contributors to pension funds becomes smaller.

The fact that ageing is not a transient issue makes it necessary to respond to the ageing process in time.

The Republic of Korea reorganized its Ministry of Health and Welfare at the end of 2003 to strengthen the roles and functions of the units in charge of population ageing and the welfare of older persons.

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific organized an expert meeting on resource mobilization for population ageing programmes, which identified factors contributing to the lack of sufficient resources to implement the Madrid Plan of Action.

The subprogramme will also support the efforts of member States to implement and monitor the commitments agreed upon at international conferences, in particular those related to the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing of the Second World Assembly on Ageing, as well as the relevant goals and objectives of the Millennium Declaration.
