This was approved by the Council in its resolution 1560 (2004).

This august Council, by adopting this resolution, has once again ridden roughshod over the African position.

This resolution was subsequently endorsed by the Economic and Social Council in its resolution 1995 31 of 25 July 1995.

It is my hope that this important draft resolution will be adopted by consensus.

Since 1980, the General Assembly has annually adopted, by consensus, a resolution on this issue.

This may be best achieved by a resolution of the Statistical Commission and the Friends of the Chair recommend that a resolution be drafted for consideration by the thirty seventh session.

Since that date, the Assembly has annually adopted a resolution, by consensus since 1980, on this matter.

In this context, Egypt also supports the draft resolution submitted for consideration by the General Assembly today.

By introducing this draft resolution, we aim to make the work of the First Committee more relevant.

The draft resolution continues the tradition of resolutions first initiated by Belarus under this agenda item 30 years ago.

This formulation is a replication of article 2 of the resolution adopted by the Institute of International Law in 1985.

The Chinese delegation supports the convening of this meeting and hopes that the draft resolution will be adopted by consensus.

By adopting this resolution, the international community has established an accountability mechanism for the perpetrators of crimes and atrocities in Darfur.

The draft resolution also strengthens provisions calling for a report on this issue for consideration by the General Assembly next year.

For reasons of simplicity, this draft resolution uses essentially the same language as was agreed by the General Assembly in its resolution 58 214 when deciding to hold the World Conference on Disaster Reduction.

This draft resolution is in two parts.

We are thus gratified by the efforts undertaken within the United Nations to develop a system wide action plan to implement this resolution.

The Secretary General's report, requested by the Council in resolution 1590 (2005), will be an important element in taking forward this vital agenda.
