Trust is important. But when it comes to political decision making, democratic control and accountability are essential.

Young people affirm that they can assist in building democratic governance mechanisms, in order to reduce corruption and increase transparency and accountability.

No less is required to reconcile independence with accountability in a democratic society. But an audit overseen by politicians is not the right way.

We also believe that the principles of democratic governance, accountability and transparency should underpin the operations of the United Nations and of its agencies.

Mexico is in favour of Security Council reform that strengthens that body's representativeness, effectiveness and accountability and ensures its members are selected in a democratic manner.

In Europe, economic policy needs more democratic legitimacy, not less. This can be achieved either by significantly strengthening democratic deliberation and accountability at the EU level, or by increasing the autonomy of the member states to set economic policy.

Japan sde facto one party state is more democratic than authoritarian, owing not only to its law based framework, but also to its culture of accountability. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elite always reacts to the popular mood and concerns often stealing its opponents ideas.

A truly democracy enhancing globalization would respect these boundaries. It would impose only those limits that are consistent with democratic delegation, possibly along with a limited number of procedural norms (such as transparency, accountability, representativeness, use of scientific evidence, etc.) that enhance democratic deliberation at home.

Extremists who hijack religion threaten governments and people everywhere. Technology is accelerating a shift in the balance of power between governments and governed that offers both opportunities for democratic accountability and obstacles to inclusive politics.

Decentralization requires accountability at all levels and corresponding multiple accountability mechanisms elections alone are insufficient.

Within our limited capacity, we have made considerable efforts to create a conducive environment for achieving the MDGS through the strengthening of democratic institutions, including the judicial system and public accountability mechanisms, principally the anticorruption commission.

It is not hard to see why. These agreements go well beyond trade, governing investment and intellectual property as well, imposing fundamental changes to countries legal, judicial, and regulatory frameworks, without input or accountability through democratic institutions.

During the reporting period, UNOTIL civilian advisers continued to focus on the transfer of skills and knowledge to their Timorese counterparts, particularly in the areas of democratic governance, rule of law, justice, human rights, transparency and accountability.
