We in the European Union have seen the vibrant Muslim communities in our own countries, and from that experience have seen how Islamic and Western cultures can be partners in a global society.

These communities in these cities are actually more vital than the illegal communities.

Bearing in mind that the Shetland coastline represents only a fraction of the European total, the costs could run into billions of dollars if this approximation was extended to cover coastal communities throughout Europe.

In the future, the European Union and its member states should fund more collaboration between police and minority communities. The EU should combat radicalization by addressing exclusion, not by conflating conservative religious faith with terrorism.

This is where the real test of cooperation lies, for our success will rely on securing the appropriate interaction and flow of intelligence between the relevant services and the financial and banking communities.

In Mexico and Guatemala, work has begun on the implementation of a specific project designed in consultation with communities and promoted by OHCHR and the Governments of both countries, with substantial financial support from the European Union.
