Recent trends in inequality were not encouraging.

During the past three decades, income inequality in the United States has increased significantly indeed, the US now has the fourth highest level of income inequality in the OECD, behind Chile, Mexico, and Turkey. At the same time, as the largest tax cuts have gone to high income taxpayers, the US tax system has become considerably less progressive.

Given that affluent households spend a smaller share of their incomes and wealth, greater inequality translates into lower overall consumption, thereby hindering the recovery of economies already burdened by inadequate aggregate demand. Today s high levels of inequality also impede the structural reforms needed to boost productivity, while undermining efforts to address residual pockets of excessive indebtedness.

The Great Recession has exacerbated inequality, with cutbacks in basic social expenditures and with high unemployment putting downward pressure on wages. Moreover, the United Nations Commission of Experts on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System, investigating the causes of the Great Recession, and the International Monetary Fund have both warned that inequality leads to economic instability.

Each of these six factors suggests actual and potential economic healing. So, not surprisingly, they have provoked excitement in some circles that the US may finally be poised to leave behind the depressing trio of unusually sluggish growth, persistently high unemployment, and high and growing inequality.

Violence and conflict were often rooted in inequality, authoritarian regimes, poverty and exclusion, while inequality was a contributing factor in social disintegration and violence.

Private and public debts in advanced economies are still high and rising and are potentially unsustainable, especially in the eurozone and Japan. Rising inequality is redistributing income to those with a high propensity to save (the rich and corporations), and is exacerbated by capital intensive, labor saving technological innovation.

These developments seem to add to global inequality. So, on balance, it seems that global inequality has been relatively stable during the last two decades.
