What would it mean to go straight to Palestinian statehood?

While economic pressures increase amongst an impoverished population, with insecurity exacerbated by the breakdown since 2001 of the PA security apparatus in the context of continuing occupation, the Palestinian people are expected to forge democratic institutions and transparent processes in preparing for statehood.

However, in the absence of a declaration of statehood, Puerto Ricans faced considerable discrimination.

And, indeed, at Bar Ilan University in 2009, Netanyahu declared his willingness to accept the creation of a Palestinian state, on the condition that it be demilitarized and that the Palestinians recognize Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people. This is no longer the case two days before the election, Netanyahu explicitly vowed that his government would never allow Palestinian statehood.

Meanwhile, the two main parties to the dispute, Palestine and Israel, are searching for unilateral alternatives to the stymied peace process. The Palestinians are pushing for international recognition of their statehood, while the Israelis are using their settlement policy to preempt a Palestinian state.

The likeliest outcome of the current flurry of diplomacy will be a fudge, which both sides will present as the best result possible. There will be another roadmap to final two state status, with some timetable for Palestinian statehood, conditional on Hamas s renunciation of violence.

The third challenge in establishing a Palestinian state is to create the institutions of statehood hospitals, ports, airports, roads, courts, police stations, tax offices, and government archives. When I was a European Commissioner, we provided funds from European taxpayers to pay for these things.

Will Abbas be able to keep the Palestinians on a diplomatic path, or will the situation degenerate again into violence and another disaster? And what will the Palestinian road towards peace look like after the UN decision to recognize some form of statehood for Palestine?

Since the only obstacle to the declaration of statehood was political discrimination, some special interest groups were talking of colonialism those who opposed the declaration of statehood were acting selfishly to preserve their own political and economic interests.

But being on the wrong side of history is never a comfortable position. And that is exactly where the US, Israel, and its closest friends including my own country, Australia will be if they resist the tide of international sentiment in favor of moving now to recognize Palestinian statehood.

Those latter dates are necessarily subsequent to those on which those States each acquired statehood under international law.

The symbolic decision on statehood, followed by Abbas s exit, will mark the end of the process that began in Oslo, and that has been undermining Palestinian aspirations for nearly two decades. With the Oslo Process now clearly dead, two options remain chaos, extremism, and violence, or a new peace process ideally one that can end the occupation and allow for Palestinian independence and freedom alongside a safe and secure Israel.

But being on the wrong side of history is never a comfortable position. And that is exactly where the US, Israel, and its closest friends including my own country, Australia will be if they resist the tide of international sentiment in favor of moving now to recognize Palestinian statehood. 160

The Palestinians will now pursue with renewed determination and vigor a path to statehood through unilateral recognition. If they succeed, Israel will face a Palestinian state with borders to which it did not agree and a continuing conflict that will become a formal inter state war, subject to international law.

What Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans particularly needed was statehood and the same rights as other United States citizens.

In such an uncertain situation, the challenge to PA economic policymakers of preparing for statehood could not be greater.

The delegates overwhelmingly agreed that the movement must keep open the option of returning underground if negotiations for statehood fail, while being ready to become a political party if a Palestinian state is born.
