UNDP and its partners have been facilitating country level action for the preparation of plans for integrated water resources management and for promoting the participation of multiple stakeholders in the implementation of water resources management practices.

Many countries have pursued the concept of destination management organizations, which are taking a lead in tourism and which involve the local authorities working in partnership with other local stakeholders.

The decentralization policy has lead to increased involvement by local stakeholders in the management of natural resources and the resulting emergence of a growing number of legally recognized farmers' organizations.

C. Civil society and other stakeholders

Mr. Klein noted the existence of several tools and strategies for information, planning and implementation, and said there is a need for consultation and coordination with stakeholders in coastal zone management.

Experience has shown that successful forest landscape restoration starts from the ground up, with the people who live in the landscape and stakeholders directly affected by the management of the landscape.

It is anticipated that Governments and other stakeholders will adopt flexible programmes to build and sustain adequate and comprehensive capabilities for the sound management of chemicals consistent with the Strategic Approach objectives.

The workshop calls upon the civil society stakeholders concerned to become more involved in the formulation and implementation of natural resource management policies and strategies and to improve their capacity for action.

(vii) Consideration of the role of stakeholders

The Working Group assisted the Vulnerability and Adaptation Resource Group, an informal group of resource stakeholders, in the development of a discussion paper entitled Disaster risk management in a changing climate , presented at the Conference, for use in promoting climate risk management issues in development agencies.

In addition to ensuring a multisectoral approach among government agencies, it will be desirable to engage other stakeholders such as non governmental organizations and the private sector in improving the management of chemicals.

Stakeholders at the international, regional, national and subnational levels have attached importance to criteria and indicators as providing a framework for policy formulation and monitoring of sustainable forest management and national forest programmes.
