The regulation is based on the European norms on safe working environment (Directive 92 85 EEC of the Council of the European Union).

In the European Union, the focus of regulation is primarily on environment, health and safety (EHS).

Similarly, the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) is a joint initiative of the European Commission and ESA, designed to establish a European capacity for the provision and use of operational information for global monitoring of the environment and security.

The European Union projects Tropical Ecosystem Environment Observations by Satellite (TREES) and FIRE provide data on deforestation and the presence of forest fires in tropical regions.

A special emphasis was placed by the Council of Europe on recommendation 1284 (1996) of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council on European environment policy (1994 1995).

The programme covered Central and Eastern European countries only, and focused on traditional areas (a) private sector development, (b) environment and energy, and (c) transport and communications.

Latvia is represented on several European Union space research committees, including the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security Advisory Council, the committee responsible for the Sixth Framework Programme thematic priority Aeronautics and Space and the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures and its committees.

The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) like other human rights treaties adopted in the same period does not contain any provision addressing explicitly the protection of the environment.

Our success in creating a more favourable political and economic environment will also facilitate the timely integration of all the countries of the region in the European and international community.
